In my opinion, the vitascope was one of the most revolutionary technologies ever created. According to the class notes and discussion, it allowed film to be projected on a screen so that multiple people could view a film at once. Before the vitascope, movie goers used several coin fed kinetoscopes to view films through a peephole in the machine. According to the book, when the vitascope was introduced to the public in 1896 by Thomas Edison, larger audiences could then view larger films simultaneously. As a result of the vitascope being able to show longer movies, more creativity was allowed by film producers. The creation of the vitascope began the moviegoer culture that we know today.

  1. Hi Alexandra,

I thought vitascope was a revolutionary invention too! We're so spoiled with all the advanced technology we have nowadays that we forget to think back and appreciate the inventors. I cannot imagine watching a movie through a peephole... Great work!

  2. Hello! I agree that the vitascope was one of the most important inventions in history. To imagine going from watching a movie through a peep hole, to roughly a 30 feet tall screen in a movie theater today is insane. I also do agree with you that, people began to be more creative when the technology advanced probably because, they had the chance to share their art with a large group of people rather than one.
